                                 Appanadu, Pandianadu, and Ramanadu are the three contemporary small kingdoms in the southernmost part of Tamil Nadu. Significantly, the ruler of Sethupathis ruled over Appanadu and Ramanadu. Before 10 centuries, Appanadu was the land of prosperity, peace, and boldness. MYSTERIES OF THIRU APPANOOR:

  

                            Thiru appanoor has many mysterious stories but the most significant among this is the lord shiva temple. We all heard about " The lost continents Lemuria, Atlantis, Dwaraka and so on".In the same way, the whole city of appanoor was lost.

                      Ironically, the above all places were submerged under the sea because of their god's curse. In the same way, the whole city was submerged.Some local heads of this village say that "this temple is same as that of lord Shiva temple in Madurai which was built by pandians. But at the time of drought, they suffered from hunger. Since there was a small pond near the temple, the head asked that pond for the temple use, but others ignored it. so pleading to lord shiva the head priest slept. At that night lord, Shiva asked the priest and some people of the village to follow the footsteps of a bullock. The footsteps reached the place called Sellur near Madurai, where the new temple was built and named it as Thiru appudayar.At the same time, mud rain occurred on appanoor and submerged whole city.

                                  Hence the whole city was submerged. Gold, silver and much other wealth of the state was under the land till now.
                                   Many  Archaeologist tried to search the ancient city, but unfortunately, no one can complete this project.Sometimes the researchers were dead or get transferred.

Story of the Vetrimalai:  

                           Vetrimalai and Udaya thevar are shepherds in Appanoor. At that time, a famous wrestler came to Pandya Nadu.He challenges everyone to fight against him but no one came forward.So the king ordered his soldiers to search for a fighter. At that time, when they were searching in a forest Udaya thevar asked them to take him to the kingdom for fighting.But he was so weak.Hence he asked the raja to give him whatever food he wanted.For ten days he was just eating. The day came.The foreign wrestler was very confident by seeing Udaya thevar. To show his strength, he was jumping. At that time, he took his shepherd's crook under the limbs of the foreigner and cut with the sickle.Fortunately, he was dead.So the pandyan asked Udaya thevar," what reward you want"? but Udaya thevar said that I am having an elder brother, so please ask him.Hence Vetrimalai was called and he said: "The first vibuthi of all pandya shiva temples should be given to our family".Hence nowadays also the family members of vetrimalai were considered as the leader. So this family has the surname of vetrimalai.
